PMI Global Summit 2022by Matt Smith, PMP, PSM-I
“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!”
That may apply to other trips but definitely not for the 2022 PMI Global Summit. The experience was, from start to finish, truly amazing. Like most of the folks I spoke with at the conference, we sort of arrived as practitioners in this giant project economy but left more as energized evangelists of how project management is the engine moving the world forward. We’re not just managing projects anymore, we’re active change makers within our organizations, communities, and world.
48 hours since leaving Las Vegas and the energy from the 2022 PMI Global Summit is still surging through me. How anyone in the Project Management profession could attend such an event and not leave energized and excited for the work that we do is beyond my comprehension. Not wanting to contain this experience to just myself I am compelled to share a few take-aways from the conference.
PMI is continually adding new certifications and courses
Many of us are somewhat aware of the shift from PMBOK 6 to PMBOK 7 and the changes that were made to certifications and the Authorized Training Partner program. What I, and I’m guessing most of the chapter, did not realize was that a number of additional resources have been ramped up or rolled out in the past two years. While the world was just getting through the pandemic, PMI was rapidly positioning itself to be a game changer for the next decade and beyond. Most of my presentation at the January 10th, chapter meeting will be about the things I’ve learned from visiting each of the PMI Cafe booths during the conference.
Here are a few highlights: Project Management Ready - A new certification designed for students (7th grade and up) to introduce them to the core concepts of Project Management. Project KICKOFF™ - FREE online course for those completely new to project management. Great resource for building core vocabulary and conceptual understanding within your organization. Micro-Credentials - Designed for those looking for a way to highlight specific areas of expertise beyond the all encompassing gold standard that is the PMP. These are lower time investments and lower costs than the traditionally larger PMI certifications
These and more exciting resources at the January 10th meeting. See you there!
Pierre Le Manh appears to be the Justin Trudeau of CEO's
Have you ever watched a press conference by Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau? If you have, then you can skip down to take-away #2 as you already know what I'm talking about. If not, let me explain the Trudeau effect. He's a sophisticated and charismatic leader who can, like most national leaders, speak intelligently about politics, policy, and the important roles of government. Try to catch him off guard and you just might get a mini lecture on quantum computing instead. He's just calm, cool, and collected regardless of whether he's speaking in English or French. Pierre Le Manh exudes a calm confidence from the stage and certainly can hold an audience. After watching him deftly manage a no-show keynote speaker I'd say he's pretty much going to be able to handle just about anything that is thrown at PMI in the coming years. Plus, pretty sure he can do it in either English or French.
Amy Webb represents 'Da Region' with style and insight
If you didn't grow up in NorthWest Indiana or happen to be a concurrent member of the PMI Calumet chapter then you just aren't going to understand what it means to be a “region rat”. Going into the PMI Global conference it didn't occur to me that I would enjoy a fantastic opening keynote nor connect with another PM from ‘Da Region’ randomly on the way to the airport. Both happened and both were delighters in the Kano analysis of my conference experience. ?
Amy's insights as a futurist to the important trends we should be paying attention to and the trendy fads we shouldn't get caught up in was an amazing way to kick things off. While I would have intuitively stated you can't control the future I probably would have been equally struck with the fantasy that somehow I can future-proof my projects. I, like so many organizational leaders, can get swept up in the false notion that if we do A then we'll get B or converting a fear-of-missing-out into an assumption that something is a trend. Preparing for and talking about will lead us to be more resilient to the emerging trends over time without creating a false sense of security around our projects. To quote Amy, “Strategic foresight makes you resilient and primed for success.” Nothing is ever guarunteed but anything we can do as PM’s to stack the odds in our favor is worth noting.
I will admit that I am secretly hoping Amy's wrong about flying cars, otherwise what am I going to do with this Delorean?
Topic Teasers Vol. 140: New Year, New Team Rulesby Barbee Davis; projectmanagement.com Due to my special skill sets, I am often asked to move between teams, most of them virtual. Since each team functions differently (especially as we try to survive by being more flexible and responsive to the customer and also work from home), I find it difficult to remember how each team interacts and how to know the unspoken rules they use to run their projects and their online meetings. Is there any method that a team can use so that members, plus those of us who come in and out as needed, know how to adjust our behavior—and how they can standardize their own? Agile into the New Year?by MATTBLCK; LinkedIn New year, new you? Or are you also someone who wonders as to why you should even bother setting New Year's resolutions? Now more than ever we question why. Should we even attempt to set any resolutions at all for this year, when so much uncertainty exists around what will transpire in the coming months? So, why do it when most remain uncertain? (Especially in times of Covid, Brexit, the introduction (to some) of remote or flexible working, …climate change… the list goes on… :D) Well, studies show that SMART plans keep you focused, give you purpose, and have the power to drive and engage you. The idea is that your goals and resolutions ignite that spark and determination that drives you. Whether it is to become the best you, you could possibly be, prove someone wrong (we don’t judge), or simply feel the rush you get when you execute against your determination. It has to WORK FOR YOU! But we believe, it can be quite empowering when done right. PMI Talent Triangle Update (Includes Video)Article from PMI.org
